Thigh Liposuction: Contouring the Inner and Outer Thighs

Thigh liposuction is a body-contouring procedure designed to remove localized fat from the thighs and improve the proportions of the legs and lower body. Some patients continue to have fullness of the inner or outer thighs despite maintaining a stable weight because genetics and individual fat distribution influence where fat accumulates.

At VENUS MD in Huntington Beach, Dr Francois Bui personally evaluates patients considering thigh liposuction. Treatment is individualized according to fat distribution, skin elasticity, leg proportions, medical history, and the patient’s goals.

What Is Thigh Liposuction?

Thigh liposuction removes localized subcutaneous fat through small access points using a thin cannula.

Treatment may involve the inner thighs, outer thighs, or other localized areas depending on the patient’s anatomy. The objective is controlled fat reduction and improved proportion rather than simply removing the greatest possible amount of fat.

Liposuction is a body-contouring procedure, not a weight-loss treatment.

Inner Thigh Liposuction

The inner thighs can accumulate localized fat that affects the contour of the upper legs. In some patients, fullness in this area also contributes to contact between the thighs.

Inner thigh liposuction can reduce targeted subcutaneous fat and create a smoother transition through the upper legs.

Skin elasticity is particularly important when evaluating the inner thighs because removing fat does not remove substantial loose skin.

The appropriate amount of fat removal depends on the patient’s anatomy and skin quality.

Outer Thigh Liposuction

Localized fat along the outer thighs can create disproportionate fullness sometimes referred to as “saddlebags.”

Outer thigh liposuction can reduce this localized fat and improve the transition between the hips, buttocks, and thighs.

Because these areas are anatomically connected, Dr Bui evaluates the overall lower-body contour rather than considering the outer thighs in isolation.

Not every patient requires treatment of adjacent areas.

Thigh and Knee Contouring

Some patients have localized fat extending toward the area around the inner knee.

When appropriate, this area may be evaluated as part of the overall leg contour. Treatment depends on the distribution of fat, skin quality, and the relationship between the thighs and knees.

The goal is a proportionate transition rather than attempting to make every part of the leg uniformly narrow.

Awake Thigh Liposuction With Local Anesthesia

At VENUS MD, thigh liposuction is performed awake using tumescent local anesthesia in nearly all appropriate patients, without general anesthesia.

Tumescent solution containing local anesthetic is introduced into the treatment area before fat removal. Once adequate anesthesia has been achieved, small access points allow a liposuction cannula to reach the targeted subcutaneous fat.

Dr Bui contours the thighs according to each patient’s anatomy, with attention to symmetry, proportions, skin quality, and transitions between treated and untreated areas.

What Can Thigh Liposuction Improve?

Thigh liposuction may improve:

  • Localized inner-thigh fat
  • Localized outer-thigh fullness
  • Disproportion between the thighs and surrounding areas
  • Fat deposits resistant to weight management
  • Overall contour of the upper legs
  • Selected areas of localized fat near the knees

Results vary according to anatomy, skin elasticity, fat distribution, healing, and other individual factors.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

Potential candidates for thigh liposuction generally have:

  • Localized subcutaneous fat of the thighs
  • A relatively stable weight
  • Reasonable skin elasticity
  • Appropriate overall health
  • Realistic expectations about body contouring

Liposuction does not treat obesity and cannot guarantee a particular thigh size, “thigh gap,” or leg shape.

Patients with substantial loose or hanging skin may require a different surgical approach.

Thigh Liposuction vs. Thigh Lift

Thigh liposuction primarily removes localized fat. A thigh lift addresses significant excess skin and may also involve removal of some underlying tissue.

Patients with reasonably good skin elasticity and localized fat may be appropriate candidates for liposuction alone.

Patients with substantial loose skin, particularly following major weight loss, may require a thigh lift rather than liposuction alone.

An examination is necessary to determine the appropriate treatment.

What Happens During Thigh Liposuction?

Before treatment, Dr Bui evaluates and marks the areas planned for contouring.

Tumescent local anesthetic solution is introduced into the treatment area. After adequate anesthesia has been achieved, small access points are created and a thin cannula is used to remove targeted subcutaneous fat.

Fat is removed in a controlled pattern with attention to symmetry and smooth transitions throughout the legs.

The amount of fat removed varies according to the patient’s anatomy and treatment goals.

Recovery After Thigh Liposuction

Swelling, bruising, tenderness, firmness, temporary numbness, and drainage of tumescent fluid can occur during the early recovery period.

A compression garment may be recommended to support the treated tissues and help manage postoperative swelling.

Light walking is generally encouraged during recovery. Strenuous exercise and heavy activity are restricted until appropriate based on healing.

Recovery varies according to the areas treated, extent of liposuction, and individual healing.

When Will I See the Result?

Some improvement may be visible relatively early, but swelling can temporarily obscure the final contour.

The thighs generally become more defined as swelling decreases over the following weeks and months. Final results should not be judged immediately after surgery.

Individual outcomes depend on anatomy, fat distribution, skin elasticity, and healing.

Are Thigh Liposuction Results Permanent?

Fat cells removed through liposuction are permanently removed from the treated area.

Remaining fat cells can still enlarge with subsequent weight gain. Maintaining a relatively stable weight can therefore help preserve the contour achieved through liposuction.

Normal aging and changes in skin elasticity can continue to affect the appearance of the thighs over time.

Risks and Limitations

Thigh liposuction is a surgical procedure and carries potential risks. These can include bleeding, infection, fluid accumulation, contour irregularity, asymmetry, changes in sensation, scarring, prolonged swelling, skin laxity, and the possibility of additional treatment.

Liposuction also has limitations. It does not remove substantial loose skin and is not a treatment for obesity or a substitute for weight loss.

Individual risks, alternatives, and realistic expectations are discussed during consultation.

Thigh Liposuction at VENUS MD

VENUS MD is a physician-led plastic surgery and medical aesthetics practice in Huntington Beach serving Orange County.

Dr Francois Bui personally evaluates patients considering thigh liposuction and develops an individualized treatment plan based on anatomy, fat distribution, skin quality, and treatment goals.

For nearly all appropriate liposuction patients, treatment is performed awake using tumescent local anesthesia without general anesthesia.

Thigh Liposuction Cost

The cost of thigh liposuction depends on whether the inner thighs, outer thighs, adjacent areas, or a combination of areas are treated.

Because the appropriate treatment area varies considerably among patients, the treatment plan and price are determined after evaluation.

Consultations are complimentary.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is inner thigh liposuction different from outer thigh liposuction?

Yes. They involve different anatomical areas and may require different contouring strategies. Some patients need treatment of only one area, while others may benefit from treatment of more than one area.

Can thigh liposuction create a thigh gap?

Thigh liposuction can reduce localized inner-thigh fat when appropriate, but it cannot guarantee a thigh gap. Leg shape is also determined by skeletal anatomy, muscle structure, skin, and overall body proportions.

Does thigh liposuction remove loose skin?

No. Liposuction primarily removes fat. Patients with substantial excess skin may require a thigh lift or another treatment approach.

Is thigh liposuction performed awake?

At VENUS MD, thigh liposuction is performed awake using tumescent local anesthesia in nearly all appropriate patients, without general anesthesia.

Will thigh fat return after liposuction?

Fat cells removed through liposuction are permanently removed. Remaining fat cells can enlarge with weight gain, so maintaining a relatively stable weight can help preserve the result.
